Living in New York, we are spoiled with the plethora of talent from around the world that stops at one of the hundreds of stages throughout the city. While living here certainly has its pros musically, there was one major con for a long time: a lack of music festivals.
So it is exciting news to learn that New York’s own Governor’s Ball Music Festival will be returning to Randall’s Island this year. The fourth annual festival is sticking to the 3-day format that it had last year, taking place Friday, June 6 – Sunday, June 8 of this year.
It’s great to see this festival making an appearance this year. Since its founding in 2011, the festival has grown from a one day outing to a three day festival covering rock, electronic, hip-hop, pop and folk. Big names like Kanye West, Guns N’ Roses, Animal Collective, Bloc Party and Of Monsters and Men brought their all to Randall’s Island last year. (and yes, the fields have been restored to their all-natural beauty)
Having this festival in New York is no easy task, I’m sure. The festival organizers have to know what artists are in demand for a city that is a stop on every touring performer’s schedule. They seem to have their finger on the pulse when it comes to knowing an artist’s potential. Performers like Phantogram, Haim, Mac Miller and Penguin Prison have had low billing at the festival and have since blossomed into headlining, seat-filling acts.
